Don’t let Lockdown Stop You, Archers – Get Back Even Stronger!
Archery is an ancient art that has transformed from one of war and defense or offense to a recreational activity. The lockdown has affected a whole lot of activities, archery included and this is probably taking a huge toll on most archers. Being unable to go outdoors and hit targets a great distance away simply trumps having to sit indoors idle all day.
All your buddies are indoors too, so, the sense of camaraderie that you always go when out with them is absent too. But who says that the lockdown has to prevent you from doing what you love the most.
If you’re an archer terribly bored in lockdown, here are tips on what you can do to occupy the time:
1) Constant Practice
Although you may not be out in the wild or have the standard targets that you’re used to, there’s really nothing wrong with practicing at home.
This is especially a great idea if you’ve got a large space like your backyard. Set up targets and these targets could range from bottles on an elevated surface or even the regular hanging target.
This would give you a feel of being outdoors again and doing what you love to do the most in the world. You can also draw a light bow for practice.
If you haven’t got so much space, then you shouldn’t be shooting any arrows. Instead, you can practice with your bow alone to improve on your consistency.
2) Maintain a Fit Form
Keeping fit in a lockdown can be very hard especially with the lazy vibes flying all around. However, it is a very necessary requirement for archers.
Similarly, if you were having problems with arm strength, now is the time to work on it. You’ve got to pull the bow back and this requires adequate strength in your arms.
A combination of strength and cardio invariably makes you go even longer. However, beyond getting the right equipment, keeping it in great shape is another essential part of the entire process. You could have the best compound bow but if you don’t take good care of it, it wouldn’t be worth much in about a year or two. Bows fall into disrepair very quickly irrespective of how well they were made. And apart from the ineffectiveness of a poorly maintained bow, it can also pose a great danger to you as well.
One of the biggest motivations for maintaining your equipment is constant practice. With constant practice, you are reminded to maintain your gear and they stay in top shape.
4) Expand Your Archery Knowledge Base
Now is the time to catch up on all the studying that you always promised yourself that you would do. Watch videos on new archery styles that you haven’t learned. Watch reviews on amazing equipment that would make the sport a lot more exciting. Take a step back in the past and take a close look at what archery used to be. You really have no idea what would catch your fancy.
Also, beyond being able to pull strings and shoot arrows, you should be able to confidently talk about archery like a researcher. This would also help to deepen your passion for the sport. And what’s more, you could even start a blog on archery, emphasizing the things that caught your fancy. You could also write up summaries and send them to your archery buddies. Opportunities abound and you would have fun while you’re at it.
Taking great care of yourself and ensuring that your mental and physical health is what it should be might just be the highlight of this piece.
The lockdown has disrupted a number of routines and your body block probably needs a good tuning. To prevent or correct this, alarms are your best bet. You can create a new routine with your alarm to keep you in line. Humans work best with routine and creating even a loose routine will help you maintain your sanity.
Similarly, you need to watch your diet. Weight gain is a lot more likely during the lockdown since you aren’t actively burning off calories. A routine can help here as well. You could have healthy foods such as meat/meat substitutes and vegetables all through the weekdays and then give yourself a break Friday night. This could extend to Saturday too, but you’re back to healthy eating Sunday and then the rest of the weekdays.
A good way to confirm whether or not you are still in shape is to try on your regular-sized jeans to see if they still fit. If they don’t, you would be needing a lot of tip number 2.
Finally, if you want to get yourself to sleep on time, avoid excess screen time, and opt for reading a book instead. You would drift off to sleep in no time. Recall that physical health is important for any sporting activity, so while you keep at your archery, do not let yourself go!
